“I Don’t Love You Anymore”

by mike on November 14, 2011

Everyone who is married fears the day of ever hearing those words. Maybe even worse is “I never really loved you”. The worst part is that people who call themselves Christians actually use these words. That makes zero sense to me.

Jesus tells us that one of the two most important commandments is to love our neighbor as ourselves. He doesn’t even stop there. He even tells us to love our enemies. How in the world can someone who is a follower of Jesus Christ tell someone they have shared their life with that they don’t love them? What does that even mean? Having been married for almost ten years now, I have to admit, I don’t know what that means. Does it mean you don’t get butterfly feelings about your spouse every minute of every day?

I choose to love Mandy every single day and I know she does the same for me. I made a commitment on our wedding day that I would choose to do this every single day “til death do us part”. We must move beyond “feeeeelings” and instead choose to love our spouse. The Sacrament of marriage depends on it!
