-We show our LOVE for God by loving our spouses well

-We must learn to love, it is an acquired taste

*this flies in the face of what society tells us is love (feeeeeelings)

-People who leave their spouses often cruelly tell them that they never loved them or just don’t love them anymore

*this is a ridiculous and absurd statement, especially coming from a Christian

*Jesus calls us even to love our enemies, not to mention our spouses

*This spouse is saying not that their spouse is unlovable, but instead that they “never acted like a Christian”

-In some ways, loving God is easy b/c he’s not mean, he doesn’t have bad breath, he doesn’t leave the toilet seat up

*it is a lot harder to love others, but God clearly stated that the two most important commandments were to love God AND love one another

*God doesn’t force us to get married, he offers it as an opportunity.  How appalling is it that we would choose to get married and then give up and say it’s too hard to love someone

*In fact, if we say we can’t love our spouse, how will we ever love the homeless man or the widow

-Deuteronomy 24:5: “If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him.  For one year, he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married”

*Christian speaker Brady Bobbink once said “to fail to love my wife and kids rightly in the name of loving other people rightly is a sham”

*We CANNOT ditch our families constantly even in the name of helping others.  God is clear that we please him by being there for our spouse.

-“The beauty of Christianity is in learning to love, and few life situations test that so radically as does a marriage”
