In this episode of the Beyond Your Wedding Day Podcast, we continued our discussion of the book Sacred Marriage by Gary Thomas. We finished our Chapter 1 discussion “The Greatest Challenge in the World.”

We tell the story of our spontaneous trip to St Louis Sunday afternoon and how it helped our marriage.

-In 1 Corinthians Paul famously says “It is good for a man not to marry”, but he follows it up with “But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each women her own husband”

*Because of all of our sinfulness including anger, lust, selfishness, etc. it is best to have a close, personal relationship with a spouse as the marriage relationship will tend to bring our negative qualities to light and allow us to work on them

*you could even make the argument, when viewing marriage in a spiritual way, that the more difficult your spouse, the more opportunity for you to grow (like exercise: the more strenuous, the more growth in strength)

*this is a view that what can I do to change MYSELF instead of how can I change MY SPOUSE

*with the perspective that your ultimate relationship and happiness comes from God, then you can start to view it as “how can this marriage draw me closer to God”

*many of us tend to treat our spouse as a sort of god that we get all satisfaction, happiness, and fulfillment from.  You are setting yourself up for a disaster

*remember that our relationship with God has always been and will always be: keep an eternal perspective

-Try to fight the urge to expect too much out of marriage

*we may laugh one minute at the thought of having more physical strength than God, and then turn around and expect all of our fulfillment from our spouse
